Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tall Guy and a Grill Fully Licensed and Insured?

We are fully licensed and insured in the State of Wisconsin for food, beverage, and liquor liability. We are happy to provide a certificate of insurance upon request. Our staff is covered by a worker’s compensation policy.

Do you provide menu tastings?

We do! Once you have completed a phone consult with someone from our team, and have received a detailed proposal with agreed-upon pricing, we can discuss options for a tasting. Here's a quick overview and our 2024 group tasting dates.

How much is this all going to cost me?

Our Corporate and Private Party Drop-Off menu includes buffet and a la carte pricing. The only additional costs on this menu are a delivery and set-up charge ($20 – $50) and applicable sales tax.

For Wedding and Special Event staffed catering, prices vary greatly depending on menu, location, and service style. For 2021, our average all-inclusive price for a buffet is $90/guest, family style service averages $91/guest, plated dinner service averages $85/guest, and dinner stations average $95/guest. Our minimum for full-service Friday, Saturday, and Sunday events is $10,000.

That sounds like a lot of money. Why does catering cost this much?

There is a lot of planning that goes into each and every event that we cater. Your price covers the cost of sourcing food from our local farms and purveyors, safe preparation and delivery of the food to your location, and availability to reach us via email or phone at any time to ask questions about your event. To perform these services we need computers, office supplies, kitchen equipment, delivery vehicles, and a facility to store all of these things. Pulling off a well executed event takes a lot of resources, and we are happy that you are considering us for your special occasion!

What’s included in that menu pricing? How do I go about building a menu?

The average menu for 2021 consists of appetizers (2 to 3 passed appetizers, an appetizer station, or a combination of these two), a salad course, 2 protein options, 1 potato or pasta side, 1 vegetable side, china rentals, linens, dessert service, coffee station, staffing, gratuity, and sales tax.

Is there anything else I need to be aware of with pricing?

For Wedding and Special Event Catering you may see a line item named “Offsite Venue Catering Set-Up/Clean-Up”. We work at a lot of historic and unique venues. These locations require special cleaning and have specific rules we have to follow that affect the amount of equipment and cleaning supplies we need to bring with us to your specific event. This covers the cost of equipment to not only prepare and serve your food, but to keep the site clean so your guests can enjoy the party.

As stated in our event contract, prices are subject to change based on market fluctuation and as such, may not always match prices listed on the menus posted to the website. The price listed on your individual event invoice is the amount due for your event.

Do I have to pick something off this menu? Do you offer anything custom?

Yes! We’ve incorporated family recipes, home brew, and many other local ingredients into custom menus. We’ve also done menus with French, German, Italian, Persian, Australian, Asian, and many other types of cuisine! Just ask and we’ll help create a memorable feast just for you!

Can you provide vegetarian and special dietary restriction meals?

Absolutely. We have many gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options on our menu. We are also more than happy to customize or make substitutions to any of our menu items to meet the diet of you or your guests. Please tell us if we need to consider food allergies at the time you are planning your menu. As we do all offsite catering, we do not have access to a kitchen once we leave our location and travel to you. We don’t carry any additional food with us other than what items are listed on your menu.

We’ve got, like, 12 kids coming to this party. Do you have anything special for them?

Children 5 to 12 years old are 50% off the adult price for weddings and fully staffed events. Children 4 and under are free, but are counted for seating. We also offer special meals for children. Please inquire about available options at the time of your booking.

Is your facility nut free?

Our entire menu is prepared in a facility that utilizes peanuts, tree nuts, soy, milk, eggs, and wheat. While we take every precaution to minimize the risk of cross contamination, we cannot guarantee that any of our products are safe to consume for people with severe allergic reactions to peanuts, tree nuts, soy, milk, eggs, or wheat. Please review our menu for detailed allergy information for each dish we offer.

Alright, I’ve got a handle on the menu, can you think of anything else we need? What about plates and all that stuff?

We will arrange for the rental of items such as tables, chairs, linens, china, glassware and silverware. The average cost of a china place setting is included in the pricing noted above. Typical china place settings include salad and dinner plates, salad and dinner fork, knife, teaspoon, water goblet, and linen napkins. We can also arrange for larger items such as tents, lighting, and dance floors by working with our local rental partners on your behalf. Many venues include items like tables, chairs, and other unique pieces. Be sure to check with your venue to see what they have to offer!

What if I don’t want china dishes, is there a cheaper option? What about disposables, those are still nice, right?

You got it. We offer palm leaf and other compostable products that look great and are about half the price of traditional rentals. Ask us about these options and we’ll provide some samples for you.

Can you take care of the bar for us too?

We are fully licensed and insured to offer bar services. We can provide anything from someone to pour beer and wine, all the way up to stocking and setting up a full bar. We’ll customize the bar package to meet your specific needs.

What about staffing, how do you handle that?

We train all of staff in house, ensuring that you have knowledgeable and well educated staff on site at your event. We are proud to pay every single one of our employees well above the minimum wage, as it’s important for us to create good paying jobs and to take care of our staff that works tirelessly to create a memorable event for you and your guests.

As a general rule of thumb, buffet style service takes less staffing then a family style or plated style of service. Buffets will require on average, 6 to 8 servers. Family style and plated dinner service may require 10 to 15 staff members depending on the complexity (and location) of your particular event. We’ll work with you to determine the most effective staffing solution for your event.

Are there any tips or gratuity included in your pricing?

Any fully staffed events booked with us will include a 10% gratuity, and is included in the per person pricing we mentioned above. That amount is split evenly between all servers, chefs, and other staff that is on hand to execute your event. There are no gratuities included with any delivery or pick-up orders so tipping is at your discretion.

What kind of uniforms does your staff wear?

Our managers, chefs, servers, and bartenders are always dressed professionally and ready to help your guests at any time. Our current uniform consists of black shoes, black pants, bistro style aprons, and a black dress shirt or chef coat. Our event managers and chefs will wear uniforms with their names on them so that they are easily identifiable to you and your guests.

Do you charge a cake cutting fee?

Cake cutting is complimentary for all of our guests!

What does your Drop Off Service Include?

We bring our award winning food to you, set it up, and leave you to enjoy the party with your guests. There are no servers. A delivery fee of $20 – $50 is charged based on the distance we must travel to your location. We also include compostable paper plates and cutlery. We always provide serving utensils for each dish and can provide any necessary chafing dishes you might need. Minimum is $1,000.

What is your service radius?

Generally we serve the Milwaukee area and southeastern Wisconsin. There may be special circumstances where we may serve further out. Please contact us for more information.

What types of events do you cater?

Almost anything you can think of! Obviously any event that could be classified as a wedding, corporate event or party and needs amazing food. We even provide catering for funeral receptions.

Do you have a BBQ grill menu for those nice summer days?

Absolutely, we have our own custom grill made by Milwaukee Blacksmith. We have a full BBQ and grilling menu packed with Wisconsin favorites.
