To finish off our 12 Days of Appetizers, I thought we should do something sweet. I’ve given this holiday staple a little update with sea salt and cracked black pepper. Don’t be afraid to add extra pepper. It will only add more flavor to this sweet treat.
This Recipe for Easy Salt and Pepper Toffee makes a bark that is great for your office secret Santa or to give to whoever is hosting you this holiday season. If you can keep from eating it, it will stay fresh in a tightly covered container for a week or two.
Salt and Pepper Toffee
- 35 Saltine crackers
- 1 cup butter, cut into chunks
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/2 cup chocolate chips*
- 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp sea salt
* If you have semi-sweet chocolate chips on hand, by all means, go ahead and use those. If you need to buy chocolate chips anyway, I’d recommend trying this with dark chocolate chips.
Line a jelly roll pan with tin foil. Arrange Saltine crackers in one layer to cover the foil, carefully breaking crackers to fit. Set this layer aside.
Preheat oven to 375º.
Combine butter and brown sugar in a small bowl. Microwave on high for one to two minutes in 30-second increments or until the butter is melted. Stir until well combined, which might take one to two minutes. Spread mixture evenly over crackers.
Bake for 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over toffee. Let stand for two minutes, then spread melted chocolate evenly on top. Sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper.
Cool for 20 minutes, then chill in fridge or freezer. Break into pieces to serve.
