In an effort to eat a little better, support local business, and stretch our cooking creativity, Mrs. TG and I signed up to try an organic produce delivery service called Brewers Organics. Our first box shipped last week, and here’s how the experience went:
It was easy to sign up for delivery online, and there were great options. We chose every-other-week delivery. We were also given the option to leave special instructions, which we did: since we’re rarely home, leave our food in the cooler (which we left out the morning of delivery) near the side door of our home. When we got home, sure enough, our food was waiting for us!
Here’s what we found when we opened our box (oh, and we already knew what we were getting, because we were sent an email ahead of time to confirm our delivery and the exact products we could expect).
For $35, we received tomatoes, bananas, kiwi, mushrooms, boston lettuce, white peaches, nectarines, carrots, potatoes, plums, a cucumber and a red onion. Not too shabby. Everything was in great shape – no bumps or bruises and nothing was over-ripe.
Although we didn’t use everything right away, here’s what we came up with to use a bunch of our produce, let’s call it the Tall Guy breakfast skillet!
Tall Guy Breakfast Skillet
1 tbsp. bacon fat
2 red potatoes, shredded
2 carrots, shredded
1/4 of a large red onion, diced
2 slices bacon, cut into small pieces
4 lg. baby bella mushrooms, diced
1/2 med. tomato, diced
salt & pepper
salsa & avocado to garnish
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and melt bacon fat. Add potatoes, carrots, red onion, bacon pieces, mushrooms and salt & pepper to taste and cook until softened to make hash – about 7 minutes. Sprinkle tomatoes over top of the hash, then carefully crack eggs over the top. Cover skillet and let cook for another 5-10 minutes, depending upon how hard you want your eggs to cook. Remove from heat, place 1/2 of hash and 2 eggs on each plate, and top with salsa and avocado.
This was a healthy, yummy breakfast with tons of protein – it kept us full for most of the day! We’re happy to support another Local First Milwaukee member in Brewers Organics, and appreciate how easy it was to get started and make changes to our food delivery order. Here’s to buying local and cooking healthy!
